Instead of adjusting individual blocks or templates one by one, Global Styles enable you to make comprehensive design changes that automatically apply across all pages and posts. This feature ensures consistency in your design and saves time by allowing global adjustments to be made quickly and efficiently.

Global Styles are an essential part of WordPress’s Full Site Editing (FSE) capabilities, giving you a unified way to control the overall aesthetic of your site.

How to Use Global Styles #

  1. Access the Site Editor:
    • Navigate to Appearance > Editor in your WordPress dashboard to enter the Site Editor.
  2. Open the Global Styles Panel:
    • In the Site Editor, click on the Styles tab located in the left panel.
    • Click on the “Edit Styles” icon, represented by a pen, located at the top right corner of the left panel.
  3. Customise Global Styles:
    • After clicking the Styles tab, click the “Edit Styles” icon at the top right of the left panel, a right panel will open with all the styles.
    • From that panel, you can adjust key design elements such as:
      • Colours: Set your site’s primary and secondary colours for text, backgrounds, links, and buttons. You can also create and manage custom colour palettes for consistent usage across your site.
      • Typography: Adjust the font families, sizes, weights, and line heights for headings, paragraphs, and other text elements. Control text alignment and letter spacing to fine-tune your site’s readability.
      • Spacing: Manage padding, margins, and other spacing settings to ensure a clean and organised layout throughout your site.
      • Block Styles: Apply consistent styles to specific blocks, such as buttons, headings, and galleries, to maintain uniformity across all instances of those blocks.
  4. Preview and Save:
    • Use the Preview option to view how your changes will appear across your site. Once satisfied, click Save to apply the changes globally.

The Style Book is a powerful feature in the Site Editor that allows you to view and manage the styles of all blocks used on your website. This tool provides an overview of how different blocks will look with your current Global Styles settings, enabling you to ensure consistency and make necessary adjustments.

How to Use the Style Book:

  1. Access the Style Book:
    • Within the Site Editor, after opening the Global Styles panel, click the eye icon next to the “Edit Styles” icon in the top-right corner of the left panel. This will open the Style Book, displaying a comprehensive overview of all the blocks used on your site.
  2. Review Block Styles:
    • The Style Book categorises blocks into different sections, such as Text, Media, Design, Widgets, and Theme blocks. You can scroll through these categories to see how each block type will appear with your current Global Styles settings.
  3. Adjust Block Styles:
    • If you notice inconsistencies or want to make changes, return to the Global Styles panel to adjust settings like colours, typography, and spacing. The Style Book allows you to preview these changes in real-time, ensuring your site’s design remains cohesive.
  4. Ensure Consistency:
    • The Style Book is especially useful for ensuring that all blocks on your site follow the same design guidelines. By reviewing each block type, you can make adjustments to maintain a consistent look and feel across all content.
